Each registrant is required to accrue a minimum of 24 hours of continuing education per registration cycle. Continuing education hours for Code Enforcement Officers (CEOs) may be accrued by participation in structured courses, in-house courses, or other elective activities.
Structured course means a formal course and one or more instructors, approved by the Building Codes Council, which may be given repetitively within the state to CEOs in any forum. For structured courses, the instructor is fully responsible for certifying the attendance of each CEO in the manner prescribed by the council. To qualify for continuing education credit, a structured course must be approved before presentation to CEOs.
In-house training means informal training of a technical nature, approved by the Building Codes Council, given within a Building Inspection Department by a member (moderator) of that department who holds a G-1 or G-2 registration. Two or more Building Inspection Departments may conduct in-house training as a joint project. For in-house training, the moderator is fully responsible for certifying the attendance of each CEO in the manner prescribed by the council.
An elective means participation in a specific activity, which is approved by the Building Codes Council, that enhances the knowledge or understanding of the codes and standards, the processes, or techniques associated with the code enforcement profession.
Two or more electives may be claimed, on an hour per hour basis, up to a maximum collective credit of 25% of the total hours (three hours per year/six hours per cycle) necessary for reregistration. All electives require an affidavit, signed by the registrant, attesting to the credit or hours claimed.
The Building Codes council has approved the following electives.
1. Participation as a member on any International Code Committee or Examination Development/Maintenance Committee.
2. Participation, as a member, the South Carolina Building Codes Council or as a member of the Code Study Committee.
3. Attendance at the South Carolina Building Codes Council or Code Study Committee meetings.
4. Presentation of an approved structured or in-house training course.
5. Preparation and presentation of successful code amendments at the International Code Council level.
6. Participation in courses required for a recognized certification maintenance program.
Continuing education credit will be granted for attendance at approved structured courses and approved in-house training while a registrant is in preparation for a certification examination.
