Examination
Each site shall have a designated person that has a permit issued by the Board to supervise people handling, dispensing, installing, transporting, repairing, or exchanging LP-Gas. All applicants wishing to obtain a permit as a LP Gas Reseller, Dealer or Installer, must pass the written examination approved by Board prior to applying. The easiest way to register to take the exam is through PSI’s website.
You must take your exam with PSI prior to applying for an employee permit with the Board. Any applicant who fails the examination is allowed one (1) re-test after a minimum seven (7) day waiting period. Any applicant who fails the re-test shall wait at least thirty (30) days before retesting. After passing the examination, apply for your license by submitting an application.
The easiest way to register to take an exam is through PSI's website and look for South Carolina information.
All study materials and permitted exam materials can be found in the Candidate Information Bulletin. Once you review the Candidate Information Bulletin, contact PSI at 855-746-8173 or visit their website to schedule your exam.
If an applicant experiences difficulty in reaching PSI on the telephone due to a large amount of applicants calling at the same time, the best time to call is between 5:00 p.m. and 8:00 p.m. eastern time.
Examination Fee: $25 per attempt, this money is paid directly to PSI.
Reseller Examination:
Each exam form is comprised of 50 multiple choice questions, and requires a passing score of 70%. It is recommended that the following documents be used in preparation for the Reseller Examination:
Candidates are strongly encouraged to utilize the PERC: Dispensing Propane Safely, employee training program in preparation for the examination.
This examination is OPEN BOOK, but only the following reference material is allowed in the examination center.

Dealer/Installer Examination:
Each exam form is 100 multiple choice questions, and requires a passing score of 70%.
This examination is OPEN BOOK, but only the following reference material is allowed in the examination center.
- NFPA 58: Liquefied Petroleum Gas Code, 2017 or 2020 Edition
(2014 edition is permitted until July 1, 2023) - NFPA 54: National Fuel Gas Code, 2018 or 2021 edition, and/or International Fuel Gas Code 2018 or 2021 edition
(2015 editions are permitted until July 1, 2023) - Code of Federal Regulations (49 CFR 177 & 180)
