Q: I am applying for a Limited License. Who can provide my supervision?
A Genetic Counselor or Physician who holds an active, non-restricted South Carolina license can provide the supervision for a Limited License (S.C. Reg. 41-60(A)(3)(b)). Supervision can not begin until the Board has approved the Supervisory Agreement (S.C. Code §40-85-30).
Q: Once the Supervisory Agreement is approved, how does supervision need to be conducted?
Supervision can be conducted in-person or by tele-supervision (S.C. Code §40-85-20(10)). Tele-supervision means clinical supervision that is provided by an electronic communication device.
Q: How many times can I take the certification examination for the Limited License?
You can take the examination twice. If you fail to pass the examination on the second time, your Limited License will expire thirty (30) days after the second failure (S.C. Code §40-85-40(C)(2) and S.C. Reg. 41-60(B)(2)).
Q: How long is the Limited License good for? Do I need to renew it?
A Limited License is good for one (1) year from the date it is issued (S.C. Code §40-85- 40(C)(3) and S.C. Reg. 41-60(B)(3)). A Limited License cannot be renewed (S.C. Reg. 41-60(D)).
Q: When applying for my Genetic Counselor license, can the license verification from another State Board be emailed to the South Carolina Board?
Yes. License verifications from other State Boards can be emailed to the Board at Genetics@llr.sc.gov.
Q: Will I need to renew my Genetic Counselor license?
Yes. You will renew your Genetic Counselor license every two years starting with April 30, 2027 (S.C. Code §40-85-50(C) and S.C. Reg. 41-40(A)). The Board will notify licensees via email when it is time to renew their licenses..
