A limited license may be issued to an applicant who meets all of the requirements for licensure except the certification requirement. However, the applicant must obtain active candidate status establishing eligibility to sit for the certification examination administered by the ABGC. A limited licensee must be supervised by a genetic counselor or a physician licensed in South Carolina.

A limited license is not renewable and shall expire automatically upon the earliest of:

  2. Thirty days after the applicant fails to pass the certification examination after the second attempt; or
  3. One year from the date the limited license was issued.
Genetic Counselors Licensed in Other States

A genetic counselor license may be issued to an applicant licensed or authorized to practice in another state, if they demonstrate to the satisfaction of the board that their license or authorization under the laws of the other state, territory, or jurisdiction of the United States, imposes substantially the same licensing requirements in this state. This includes but is not limited to requesting a verification of licensure from the other state(s).

Applicants are required to:

  1. Complete the application form and remit the required fees;
  2. Remit a copy of current license(s);
  3. Request verification of licensure from all states where you have ever been licensed; and
  4. Provide a copy of your ABGC certification.
