Applications made to the SCBON are valid for one year. If all requirements are not met within the year, a new application will need to be submitted and all required information will need to be re-submitted. The SCBON recommends completing the Credential Evaluation requirement before applying due to these time constraints.

Since the educational systems of countries vary greatly, comparing the educational level of individuals educated in different countries is complicated and requires specialized knowledge. The procedure used to make such a comparison is completed by a credential evaluation service company.

Credential evaluation services utilize a process of determining the U.S. academic equivalent of studies completed outside the United States. The process provides a detailed analysis of the credentials earned at multiple levels received outside the United States. The evaluation process results in a statement of comparability of an applicant’s education when assessed against U.S. standards. This evaluation is sent directly to the State Board of Nursing for South Carolina.
