Volunteer Nursing Licensing Information
Prior to submitting an application, please be sure to review required documents, education, exam information, exam attempts, fees, legislative updates, and more below. The Board of Nursing requires all applications to be submitted online via LLR's eServices platform.
The Board may issue a no-fee volunteer license to a retired nurse on inactive status who has either practiced for at least twenty-five (25) years or reached age sixty-five (65) with a minimum of fifteen (15) years of practice. The nurse must wish to volunteer through a Board-approved charitable organization and submit an application demonstrating completion of at least twenty-five (25) hours of initial training with that organization. The nurse must have been on inactive status for no more than ten (10) years.
A volunteer license permits unpaid nursing services only for the specific charitable organization listed on the license and is not transferable. A separate application and license are required for each organization.

A volunteer nurse license may be renewed annually with proof of at least twenty-five (25) hours of service or additional training with the same organization during the prior year and may be renewed indefinitely if all requirements continue to be met.
