LLR-Board of Medical Examiners

Service Area: Licensure, Physician Assistants

Subject: The use of Physician Assistants for Screening at Health Fairs

POLICY:

The Board interprets the practice of medicine in this State as permitting Physician Assistants (PA's) to participate in health fairs in this State by performing, without an approved protocol or physician supervision, medical tests for which they individually are trained to perform and which have been approved by the supervising physician, provided that each individual PA participates with the supervising physician's prior knowledge and approval and participation is strictly limited to the collection and reporting of medical data for the use of the patient or the patient's designated health care provider(s). In order not to be considered the practice of medicine, as defined by Section 40-47-40 of the Code of Laws of South Carolina, as amended, the collection and reporting of medical data by PA's without an approved protocol or physician supervision must not include any diagnosis or treatment of any kind.
